6:55 PM March 9th, 2014. Jacob Hyde. Freedom, CA. A day earlier this would haven been an impossible prospect, on account of darkness.
In 1784 Benjamin Franklin poked fun at the French for their habit of squandering daylight. Tongue firmly in cheek, he proposed that they might save money on candles if they were to rise in accordance with the sun (as opposed to the clock). Over a hundred years later, an English-born New Zealand post office clerk, George Vernon Hudson, seriously suggested the adoption of a Daylight Savings Time. His real motivation? He was an amateur entomologist and astronomer who wanted more daylight after work to collect bugs before he went out stargazing.
Here’s to Ben, George and to time spent (after work) laying in the grass and looking at the sky.
